Chapter 12
Janice got into her car, soaked to the skin, and drove in the pouring rain toward Dapville. Jacob was a graduate student in Dapville. He excelled academically and received full scholarships every year, which meant she rarely had to worry about him.
Ever since their mother passed away, it had just been the two of them. Without Jacob, Janice would feel like living n meaning.
no longer had
If that weren't the case, she wouldn't have endured Simon and the Fitzgerald family for so many years just because Hugh saved Jacob's life.
But everything that happened today, coupled with Simon's candid yet heartless words, made her feel that all her years of effort and sacrifices had been wasted on an ingrate.
She sped toward Dapville Hospital, driving above the speed limit.
Janice maintained a cold, stoic expression throughout the journey, focusing on staying calm. She couldn't afford to get into an accident
-not when Jacob needed her.
After the car came to a screeching halt in front of the hospital, she immediately jumped out and ran straight inside without finding a parking spot to park her car. However, in her haste, she failed to notice a car turning in behind her.
Janice was lightly struck on the leg, causing her to fall to the ground.
The driver of the luxury car was startled. “Why did this lady...”
The driver was about to get out to check on her when he saw her scramble to her feet and rush into the hospital.
"Mr. Moore, this.....
As Edward watched Janice run into the hospital, he said, “Check on her later.”
"Understood."
It wasn't entirely his fault, anyway. He didn't expect her car to suddenly stop and her to run out. She must have an emergency.
Outside the emergency room, Janice's legs trembled uncontrollably, so much so that she had to sit down to hear the doctors explain Jacob's condition.
They said Jacob had been in a car accident while taking a taxi to Greenfield City, and his injuries weren't as severe as the driver's.
Why would Jacob suddenly head to Greenfield City? Janice signed the necessary papers, asking the doctors to use the best medication available.
However, when it was time to pay, the cashier said, “Sorry, ma'am, but this card can't be used."
That card was a supplementary card Simon had given her. Janice quickly opened her payment app and asked the cashier to scan the QR code.
"This doesn't work either. It shows restrictions on out-of-town transactions."
This had never happened before. Had d Simon deliberately restricted the card? Janice didn't want to think the worst of him, but Jacob's life was on the line.
"One moment, please." She stepped into the stairwell to call Simon.
Simon finally answered after a long wait, his tone cold. "What do you want?"
How dare he play dumb?
"Why can't I use the card with both our savings for out-of-town transactions?"
Simon chuckled. "You need money? Beg me, Janice. Admit you were wrong, and I'll change the restrictions immediately."
"Simon Fitzgerald, that account has my money, too! My brother is in trouble and needs the money. Can we not argue about this now?"
"If you care about your brother so much, what's wrong with apologizing to me?" Simon thought he was perfectly justified.
Janice clenched her fists, her nails digging into her palms. She closed her eyes and said hoarsely, “I'm sorry. I was wrong
"That was not sincere enough."
Janice swallowed her pride, uttering, “I shouldn't have argued with you and disobeyed you. I'm sorry. Chapter 12
Simon was silent for a moment before laughing, clearly pleased. "It's good that you've acknowledged your wrongdoing. I'll transfer some money to that account for you."
After hanging up, Janice waited anxiously for the money as she couldn't care less about being humiliated right now. But when she saw the amount, she froze.
Her phone buzzed with a message from Simon, saying, "Ten thousand should be enough to save your brother. That's all you're getting. The rest is my earnings."
His earnings... Their account had over
er 80 million dollars in liquid funds, with more in the company's account. After all these years of hard work, he had the audacity to say she only had ten thousand and that the rest belonged to him?
The overwhelming disbelief, betrayal, and other emotions sapped all the strength from Janice's arms. Her phone slipped from her hand and fell to the floor, where a passing hospital bed crushed it, leaving the screen shattered.
Janice didn't even have the energy to pick it up.
“Ms. Smith?” Matilda was surprised to see her there. She didn't think she'd see Janice in such a disheveled state.
A man in black appeared at the end of the corridor. His leather shoes were spotless, not a drop of rain on them. His sharp features and short hair made him look distant and unapproachable.
He had heard Matilda address Janice as Ms. Smith. So she was Janice Smith?
"Ms. Moore..." Janice forced herself to calm down. "I'm in some trouble. Could I borrow some money from you? My brother is in critical condition, and my card isn't working"
Without hesitation, Matilda handed her card to the medical staff. "The password is six sevens."
“Thank you so much, Ms. Moore. I'll pay yon back tomorrow.
Matilda led Janice to a nearby seal. “It's no problem. But what happened to your arms? They're scratchednoveldrama
up."
"I'm fine," Janice replied, shaking her head.
"Is that your phone?"
Janice glanced at the shattered phone lying on the floor before looking away. "No."
That was just a piece of trash, trash she would never pick up again.
"Edward?"
Janice, who was lost in thought, didn't notice someone approaching until she heard the greeting. She was too preoccupied with Jacob's
situation.
Edward nodded in acknowledgment before walking off toward an office.
"Ms. Moore, do you know this lady? I accidentally hit her with the car earlier. Is she hurt?" the driver asked hurriedly.
Janice came to her senses. "I'm fine, really. I was in too much of a hurry. It's not your fault."
“If you feel unwell later, please contact me anytime,” the driver said, handing over his business card.
“It's really fine,” Janice said with a forced smile.
“Where is Jacob's family member?" Someone called out, and Janice quickly rari over, Matilda didn't disturb Janice further since the latter was busy and instead went to look for Edward. Edward was finally back. Without him, she was unable to keep the power struggle in check any longer. Jacob's condition had finally stabilized after a long night. Although his injuries weren't severe, he had lost a lot of blood, and the injury to his lower back concerned the doctors, who feared it might affect his mobility.
"Janice?" The moment Jacob saw Janice, he got worked up.
Despite his injuries, he anxiously asked, “I saw the news from Greenfield City, What happened between you and Simon? Why was he married to someone else?"
Jacob often kept an eye on news from Greenfield City, partly to check if his sister was in trouble, but his busy schedule had kept him from noticing anything until now. When he did, he rushed to Greenfield City but ended up in an accident.
When Jander learned that Jacob had been troured trying to reach her, her heart broke.
Chat
"Don't worry about me. What happened with Simon is just a matter of business strategy. You don't need to be concerned,"
"What kind of business strategy involves switching brides?" Jacob, who was sharp and business-savvy like his sister, didn't buy her explanation.
Janice forced a laugh at her own naivety.
“Did you have a falling out with Simon?" Jacob pressed. "I'm your brother. Why are you hiding this from me?”
Janice didn't respond.
“So it's true that you had a falling out?” With a supportive demeanor, he said, “Then that is for the better. Just
quit!
"Isn't Prosper Stitch Group still trying to recruit you? I recently heard from my roommate that his cousin-the CEO of Prosper Stitch Group is going to be back."
He then paused for a moment. "Simon's no good, Janice. He's a wolf in sheep's clothing. Don't let him leave you with nothing," Jacob advised, unaware of how accurate his words were.
Janice's mind was a mess. "Get some rest."
She needed to withdraw money from her secret account to repay Matilda and buy a new phone. For years, all her visible carnings had gone into Simon's account, and now he had shamelessly claimed them all. Fortunately, she had secretly set aside some savings. That money had originally been intended as a reserve fund for Refined Threads Co. Who would have thought that it would serve as her lifeline in her time of need? Matilda was In the hospital director's office when she received a message.
“Edward, it seems Janice has fallen out with Simon. She's been demoted to the crochet department, and her office has been cleared out.
Such personnel changes rarely remained a secret in their industry.
The man smoking a cigarette glanced at his phone. After a moment, he said, “Arrange a meeting. I'll talk to
her personally."
It wouldn't be long before news of the conflict between Janice and Simon spread through Greenfield City. Other companies and Melody & Loops Creations would undoubtedly try to recruit her.
Who wouldn't want to covet a top-tier crocheter who could do double-sided crochets and was also sought after internationally? Only someone as blind as Simon could fail to see her worth.
What do you think?
