Despicable Roommate

I told you so

I didn’t see Kari in class on Wednesday but didn’t worry so much about it because I thought it could have been caused by her addiction to Ron. She wanted to be around him all the time it was annoying. When Kari met Ron, she forgot about everything else. She was so deeply in love that she would do anything that pleased him even if it meant throwing away her life.

Just as I got out of campus, Jen called me saying I needed to be in her room as soon as possible. I didn’t take it seriously because we always told each other so even when there was nothing really urgent. I kept walking and she called me again so I decided to get a cab, in order to get there quickly. She didn’t tell me what it was all about.

When I opened the door, my eyes landed on a crying Kari and lots of stuff in the living room. The boxes and suitcases belonged to Kari. Did she leave her boyfriend?

I was quite surprised because I’d began to think he really loved her. The fact that I’d been against her moving in with him from the start didn’t reduce the shock. It had not lasted for even one semester. I knew that Ron couldn’t be trusted and was right to hate him.

Sadly, he was Alec’s cousin and they were all the same. I decided to stop thinking because a part of me didn’t want to associate Alec with Ron. A month back, I would have thought they were similar but I had realized that Alec was not as manipulative as his cousin.

“What happened, sweetie?” I asked, sitting next to her on the floor. She just looked at me and continued sobbing. Jen was nowhere to be seen.

“He’s not worth it,” I continued, trying to comfort her. I really hate it when I’m with someone who is crying. It’s really so vexing as I never know what to do or say. I’d never cried in front of anyone, except that time when everyone had walked out of my life except Alec. Comforting a person is one of the hardest things ever.

“You warned me but I never listened. I was so stupid.”

“Come on,” I said although a part of me badly wanted to say ‘I told you so’. There was no point to it though. “Don’t talk like that. You’re not to blame because you truly loved him.”

In my head I thought she was the one to blame for going to live with the moron. You could never trust a young boy. Ron was too young to want to settle down for the long term. He probably just needed someone to cook and clean for him and have sex.

“I’m such an idiot.”

“Just stop blaming yourself!” I almost yelled because I was getting really impatient. Call me a bad person but there are things I can’t stand. I loved my friend but she didn’t have to keep repeating things however much she was hurt. She was to blame for being stupid and had learnt her lesson, like it happens to everyone.

Thankfully, Jen came in a few minutes after with some painkillers. I wondered if Ron was worth all this. Maybe one time it would happen to me and I’d get to realize what it meant to be heartbroken.

“What exactly caused it all?” I asked Jen.

“He just got back and told her to get out. I hear he no longer loves her. He’s so stupid.”

That didn’t make him stupid but I nodded. Sometimes we just realize it wasn’t love but infatuation so we can’t continue anymore. The problem is that it’s hard for the other partner to understand.

“He’s such a block head,” I agreed with nothing else to add on.

Thankfully, Jen’s roommate came in.

“What a surprise!” She exclaimed. “Are you staying with us, Lynn?”

Kari had gone to the bathroom to organize herself.

“Kari is.”

“Why?” She asked, putting her notebook and purse on the table near the window.

“She has nowhere to stay,” I replied.

“What about-”

“It’s a long story,” I said desperate to change the topic. “How was your day?”

“It was boring really, I just wanna watch a movie.” She said and sat on the couch.

“Same.”

“We’re all going to watch one then,” Jen declared. “I decide.”

“I don’t like your choice of movies,” Her roommate complained.

“Kari isn’t happy so we should watch nothing romantic,” I told the girls.

“Oh, I forgot.” Jen said.

“Seriously?” Kari stepped into the living room. I fought the urge to laugh because Jen had been caught red handed. How could she forget that her best friend was unwell?

I looked over their collection and choose Divergent, although we had watched it before. It was the most suitable from their collection.

“For how long are you staying?” Gillian asked when I thought we were done with that topic.

“Till she gets where to stay,” I answered for Kari.

“Alec is going to have to move back to his cousin.”

What?

I gasped.

I wasn’t ready for this. Alec leaving me? No, I couldn’t let it happen. I was just beginning to know and get comfortable with him. Now he had to move? I wasn’t going to let that happen, not if I could prevent it.

“You should tell him to hurry and get out, Lynn.”Please check at N/ôvel(D)rama.Org.

“He’s just trying to settle so please give him some time.”

“It’s my room and I can’t be displaced while he’s enjoying himself.”

“But you left,” I yelled.

“He’s a jerk just like his stupid cousin and he’ll break your heart if you get close to him.”

“It’s a matter of choice,” Jen said. “You’ve got to choose either your best friend or that useless bàstard.”

“Don’t call him that.”

“That’s what he and his cousin are,” Jen said. “A pair of useless bastards.”

“Look, I’ve got to go.” I said and left the room.

I had to choose either Alec or Kari? This was going to be real hard.
