Chapter 764

Chloe couldn't shake the feeling that Connor had a lot on his mind. But he wasn't ready to open up to her about it. After Connor got back to the office that day, Chloe took it upon herself to call Teddy. Teddy mentioned that the boss was stressed about the informal meeting with the four big families coming up the next day. Chloe decided not to dwell on it.
The following day, representatives from the Gilbert and Nagel families showed up at Sartori Tower. Desmond was there for the Gilbert family. Although Lando was technically the head of the family, Desmond was more of a figurehead director, not involved in day-to-day affairs. On the Nagel family's side was Kent, who happened to be Devon's dad. Devon and Connor went way back as childhood buddies, but Kent was firmly in Claire's camp.
The meeting room wasn't packed. Besides Desmond and Kent, Connor and the DreamMaker team were present. Teddy, who led the team, laid out the project details. Wrapping up, he said, "Al is the future, no doubt about it. The Nagel family runs a chain of hotels, and the Gilbert family is in the car business. Dream Maker isn't your typical Al; it's going to shake things up. Soon enough, both the Nagel hotels and Gilbert cars will be at the forefront with cutting-edge tech. Sartori Corporation is ready to offer a thirty percent stake for both families to come onboard..."
Desmond had heard enough. He slammed the proposal down on the table. "Connor, back in the day, no matter what you came up with, even if it was worthless, I'd back you, no questions asked. But we've been nothing but genuine with you, and look how you've treated my daughter. From here on out, the Gilbert family isn't going to be at your beck and call. I'm not investing a single share. I'm here today to make that crystal clear."
Connor sat at the head of the table, his expression icy. "Brother-in-law, are you in charge of the Gilbert family now?" His tone was polite, but his words cut deep. Desmond felt the sting of being referred to as "brother-in-law" - a title he'd rather not have, given his ties to Claire.
"Jeffery's not well, so yeah, I'm
calling the shots for the Gilbert family," Desmond replied, knowing full well he hadn't informed Lando
about any of this. Lando wasn't
exactly a fan of Connor
having always looked up to Jeffery. He placed higher value on the Sartori Corporation as a whole. With Connor at the helm now, Desmond figured he'd better side with him.
Connor didn't flinch. "So, if the Gilbert family's out, what about the Nagel family?" he asked calmly.
Kent chimed in, trying to smooth things over: "Connor, ideally, we'd support Sartori Corporation without hesitation, but you know how tough the market's been. The Nagel family's feeling the pinch too̟and we can't back this new project. We hope you understand."
“So, the Nagel family's pulling out too?" Connor inquired, unfazed.
Claire was there too, and she stood up. "Little brother, it seems like your DreamMaker project is hitting a dead end. At the initial shareholder meeting it was agreed that the other three families had to have a thirty percent stake, and you were on board with that. Since the Gilbert and Nagel families aren't interested, why push it?"
