Chapter 22
individual.
I spent the next day in hospital, reading the book my uncle gave me about The Gifted while I waited for him to arrive. The book explained all the different kinds of powers Gifted Werewolves had been bestowed by the Moon Goddess and how it would manifest in the There were three main types of gifts that were recurring.
There were The Healers, and these people could not only heal fast and miraculously, but they could heal other with just a touch.
Then there were The True Warriors, and these werewolves had exceptional strength and speed as well as faster reaction times to aid them in battle.
The last main category were The Elementals and these people could control and manipulate the elements. Most only could control one element at a time but some could control more, if not all. The book delved into all known Gifted people, naming werefolk of all ages and packs.
The last page, however, was blank with only a title; The Spirit Wolf. The pages following that were completely empty.
A knock on my door pulled me from my thoughts and I quickly hid the book under the covers. A familiar head of dark hair peeked around the door, and I smiled at the figure.
"Good morning Luna, I hope you're doing well," Genevieve smiled, walking in.
"I'm doing well Gen. I just can't convince the doctors that I'm well enough to leave," I frowned. She chuckled besides me.
"That's because they were all alpha ordered to keep you under observation for a few days," she smirked. I shook my head to myself.
"How is everyone doing?" I asked. I didn't get a chance to get up and see if the pack was doing well.
"There was another rogue attack yesterday, which scared some pack members but it was nothing serious," she brushed off, clearly lying. I chose to ignore it, not willing to delve into that topic anyways. "Anything else I should know about?" I asked.
"There's a rumour going round," she admitted. I gave her a curious look, asking her what it was. "Well, people think you were bleeding from your mark," she explained, looking unsure.
"I was," I furrowed my brows. Her eyes widened and eyebrows shot up as she eyed the skin on my neck.
"But that doesn't make any sense," she frowned. "The alpha told everyone you had an injury that you weren't healing from," I shrugged.
"He didn't lie. It was an injury that wasn't healing,"
"Well that changes things. Like I said there are rumours going around and as your best friend, I'm here to prepare you," I gave a small smile at her words, touched that she saw me as her best friend. "What are the rumours?" I asked.
"Well," she began. She fidgeted with her hands, looking uncomfortable. "They're saying that the moon goodness is punishing you. Taking away your title as Luna of the pack and as the alpha's mate," I pursed my lips, sighing.
"Of course they would think that," I muttered angrily. For them, as long as I was a rogue, I'd never be good enough for them. Everything I did was under their scrutiny and I'd simply never be able to please them.
"The way I see it, it's mainly Aerin's family and the Graeme family that are starting these rumours. The rest of the pack are just lost and easily swayed by their words. I'm going to have a word with them again," she murmured the last bit to herself. "It's fine, I can do that myself," I brushed off. Despite my calm exterior, I couldn't help the stabbing pain in my chest.
Before I could dwell on the feeling any longer, the door was pushed open and a familiar head of white hair poked through. Cora hobbled her way in, and Genevieve gave up her seat for the elderly woman.
She sat there, giving me a hard look, her wrinkly lips pursed to look even thinner than they were.
"I'll just leave now Luna. I'll come visit you later," Gen smiled awkwardly. "Rest well," she leaned over and pressed a soft kiss to my cheek and I smiled at her, my chest expanding at her sweet gesture.
Cora's icy gaze was enough to freeze the warm feeling that fluttered in my chest. I frowned at her, not appreciating her glare or her rude silence.
"What did I do wrong now Cora?" I asked, tilting my head at her. She tutted.
"You're more trouble than you're worth, Girl," I raised a brow at her.
"I don't know why my family is being cursed like this," she continued. "First my son and now my grandson," she muttered angrily.
I snarled loudly at her, snapping my extended canines for added effect as I leaned dangerously close to her.
"I didn't ask to be mated to your grandson and so far out of everyone in this wretched pack, I've had to suffer the most, by his hand no less," I growled.
"If you keep speaking this nonsense to me, I might just go insane and bite your head off," I said, licking my canines. She looked visibly shaken, averting her eyes. I hovered for a moment, enjoying her discomfort before I pulled away, leaning back on my bed. She stood up, eyeing me silently before leaving with a huff.
Not even a minute later did someone else knock on the door and I was growing tired from all these visitors.
My uncle stepped in, followed by Romeo and I let out a breath I hadn't known I was holding. I sighed, looking at my two only family members, my shoulder slumping with resignation.
"Pack your bags, we're leaving soon," I spoke. My voice sounded tired and rough. My uncle broke out into a grin, looking gleeful.
"Finally," he clapped his son on the back, giving him an expectant look.Belongs to (N)ôvel/Drama.Org.
"I've already packed," he responded, looking towards me. They both looked towards me, expectantly.
"How did you know to pack?" I asked, furrowing my brows. My uncle shuffled closer towards me, perching on the side of my bed, besides my legs.
"Mija," he sighed softly, reaching a hand to brush my hair from my face. He tucked it behind my ear, giving me a pained smile. "That mate of yours wasn't treating you right and you don't deserve that. You're destined for greatness. It was just a matter of time," he explained.
"I don't feel it anymore," I frowned. "The ache in my chest where the mate bond would pull. It's gone. I feel empty," I admitted, looking down, tracing my index finger on the inside of my wrist. "Are you sure?" He asked.
"Yeah I'm sure. It's like I can breath for the first time in a while, but somehow this emptiness inside me is making me restless," I described.
"I can't say I've heard of this. But maybe it's a sign from the moon goddess. A sign to perhaps leave and move on?" He suggested, sounding unsure and I shrugged.
"Whatever it is, we're leaving soon. I just need to figure out when so we can all escape," I sighed, realising how much supervision I would be under while in the hospital.
"Okay then. When you give the word we will leave," My uncle said. "We have a truck we can take to carry our stuff. Where exactly are we going?"
"The Green Mountains down south. That's where I met Diana and where I have some unclaimed land," I explained. Romeo nodded.
"I'm so proud of you, you know that?" Uncle beamed. He leaned over to press a kiss to my forehead and I returned his smile. They both got up and shuffled to the door. "Soon?"
"Soon," I confirmed, nodding once. With one last look, they both left the room, closing the door with a soft click.
I slumped back into my pillow, my mind already racing with the possibilities of my escape from this abusive pack.
