Chapter 108
Felt Wronged
Paul furrowed his brow slightly. "Harper, those things Benjamin said... Do you really have such a person in your heart?"
"No, Grandpa, of course not. I swear to you, if I'm lying, I..."
"Silly girl, I'm not blaming you, nor am I questioning you. I'm just worried you're being mistreated. If there really was such a person, you should have told me from the beginning. If there isn't, why would Benjamin say such things? And why haven't you defended yourself?"
Paul's gentle inquiry touched Harper deeply.
Harper spoke softly. "Grandpa, there was never such a person, not before and not now. Benjamin said that because I made up an excuse before we got married to relieve him of any pressure about the marriage. As for now, any misunderstanding he has because of that excuse doesn't really bother me anymore."
"What do you mean, Harper?"
"Paul, I think it might be better for us to divorce. I don't want to use a child to tie down Benjamin, and I certainly don't want a child to be born into this kind of environment. So, I hope you can help me continue to hide the fact that I'm pregnant."
Paul fell silent, his eyes clouded with depth, and his brows frowned tightly. It was a long time before he spoke. "Is there really no room for negotiation? Is separation the only option?"
Harper's eyes widened in sad as she met Paul's gaze. She honestly didn't want to hurt him or Scott and Lily, who had been very kind to her. But the thought of her child calling Lauren "Mom" made her heart ache even more.
So, she had to make a decision.
Harper lowered her gaze, unable to keep looking into Paul's eyes for fear that she might change her mind.
She whispered, "Yes, it's necessary. Divorce is better for both me and Benjamin. More importantly, I don't want my child growing up in a home without a loving foundation between the parents. Paul, forgive my selfishness, but I can't let both myself and my child be wronged."
Her lips were tightly pressed together, and her defiant eyes reddened.
Over the past year of marriage to Benjamin, she never felt she was suffering because she had made her own choices.
However, Benjamin's plan to co-parent their child with Lauren was something she couldn't accept, and it was this unbreakable bond between Lauren and Benjamin that made her feel wrong. Seeing her distress, Paul felt compassion.
Paul gently patted her shoulder and said softly, "Alright, since you've made up your mind, follow your own decision. But remember, don't completely cut ties with the Martin family, or else I won't let you off easily."
Paul carefully avoided mentioning anything about the child, as he didn't want Harper to dwell on it or think that he only cared about the child.
However, to reassure Harper, he couldn't help but add, "Harper, no matter what happens with you and Benjamin, remember, you will always be part of the Martin family. The child you're carrying will also always be a legitimate member of the Martin family."
Harper and Paul talked for a while before she left the room.
In the living room, Benjamin, Scott, and Lily were also talking about this.
Scott asked, "What are you planning exactly? You go public with your relationship with Harper one day, and then you're preparing to have a child the next. Benjamin, this abnormal behavior makes people suspicious."Content (C) Nôv/elDra/ma.Org.
"Do I need to say that I indeed have a purpose for you to believe me?"
Benjamin's tone was cold as he leaned back on the sofa. His handsome face showed no hint of warmth, only a chilly detachment.
