I Once Married You (Harper and Benjamin)

Chapter 141

Is Love Necessary?

She prepared the agreement from memory according to the one Benjamin had given her before.

Then, she printed it out and signed her name.

When the neat inscription of "Harper" appeared after "Authorized by", she knew it signaled the impending end of their marriage.

Despite reaching this point, she had to keep moving forward without any hesitation or doubt.

She sealed the agreement in an envelope and arranged for a courier from the local delivery service to send it to Benjamin's office at the Martin Group for his signature. After completing these tasks, Harper felt drained. Her eyes were devoid of life, while her beautiful face was expressionless.

She thought she was mentally prepared and wouldn't be affected, but her heart still ached terribly.

Asking the man she loved for a divorce was excruciating beyond words.

Leaning back in her office chair, she stared blankly at her belly.

It seemed like an eternity before her phone on the desk suddenly rang.

Harper glanced at the caller ID, then answered, and a cold, questioning voice came from the other end. "Harper, what does this mean?"

"I thought I made myself clear," she replied coldly as she gazed out the window.

Could anyone discern her emotions at this moment?

Benjamin's voice was cold and hostile as he asked, "So, is divorce the only solution?"

"Benjamin, your actions easily lead me to believe you're reluctant to get a divorce because you've fallen in love with me. So, have you?" she asked for the third time. Despite knowing the answer, she still wanted to ask.

His actions easily misled her. He didn't love her, but why did he want to tie the two of them together with marriage?

She wondered if it was because they had been married for a year and he was used to it.

Or was it because maintaining their marital facade wouldn't affect his relationship with his true love, so he thought it was convenient for him too?

If so, it was truly pitiful.

If she weren't pregnant, perhaps she would have been willing to continue waiting for him out of love. But now, she wasn't willing anymore because someone more important needed her protection. With her words, the atmosphere tensed instantly.

Benjamin fell silent for almost half a minute before calmly asking, "Do I need to love you to avoid divorce? I thought we understood from the start that love wasn't necessary for our marriage. So, Harper, are you sure you won't reconsider this?"

"Was this his first direct response to this question?

"It definitely counted as one."

Harper answered herself in her mind.

But the answer wasn't surprising. He would never fall in love with her.

Harper remained firm. "No, since we've both considered divorce, perhaps parting ways is the best option for us."

"I disagree with that. We've only just made our relationship public. If we divorce now, it will have a huge negative impact on the Martin Group and the Martin family after this matter is exposed. So, I disagree with the divorce!"

His stance was resolute, knowing that any repercussions would extend far beyond just the two of them. It would affect numerous employees and all subsidiaries under the Martin Group.

So, divorce was out of the question at this juncture. Otherwise, outsiders would perceive their marriage as a mere farce, playing with the public's sentiments.

But Harper countered. "Benjamin, we managed to keep our marriage hidden for a year. If you hadn't made it public, maybe no one would have associated us now. Since we kept our marriage secret, can't we also keep our divorce hidden?"

"So you're blaming me for not keeping our relationship private?" he coldly questioned, his words tinged with anger.

Harper remained silent, biting her lip.

The tension between them grew palpable.Exclusive content © by Nô(v)el/Dr/ama.Org.

Soon, a reminder from Curtis came from Benjamin's end. "Mr. Martin, the meeting is about to start, and..."

"Harper, I'll give you time to think about those two words, but I disagree to it. Do you hear me?"
