Chapter 12 We Just Got Our Marriage Certificate Yesterday
Ava’s eyes lit up when she heard what Chloe said.
However, she suppressed her excitement and stepped forward to stop her. “Coco, don’t be so impulsive. This is your home. Where will you go if you quit?
“I have some savings. I’ll give you my bank card when we get home tonight. Consider it your salary, okay?”
“Why do you still want to help her? If she wants to leave, just let her leave. Nobody wants her here anyway,” Benjamin said.
He felt frustrated because the deal with Lionel had fallen through and he now had to handle Chloe’s mess. Knowing that Chloe would not apologize to Lionel, he did not want to deal with her anymore. He called for the security guard and ushered Ava into the office.
Soon, the guards rushed in and tried to drag Chloe out.
“Don’t touch me! I can walk on my own!”
She took a deep breath, straightened her back, and walked out of Artron in big strides. However, she was not expecting to run into Jake, who was here to see Ava.
When Jake saw the dark expression on Chloe’s face, he shook his head and suggested earnestly, “Why can’t you be more like Ava? Instead of defying your father, you should obey him. After all, men prefer women who are submissive. You let your emotions cloud your judgment.”
Although Chloe was beautiful and competent, she was nothing without her family’s support. Even if she worked tirelessly for the rest of her life, it was unlikely that she would be able to afford a house. And
what Jake sought was power, influence, and a partner who could assist him in his career. He had no interest in aiding those in need.
“Are you done talking?” Chloe was disgusted with this scumbag and did not wish to look at him for even a second. “If you’re done, get out of my way.”
“How dare you!” Jake was ticked off by her attitude. “I’m sincerely trying to help you, and this is how you repay me?”
“Did I ask for your help? You should just mind your own business.”
After she had finished speaking. Chloe turned around and left. Jake was infuriated and he snarled, “Do you really think of yourself as a pure woman? I’m just trying to help as a friend since we couldn’t be lovers. If not, why would I waste my time talking to you now?”
Hearing his words, Chloe stopped in her tracks and turned to look at him. She admitted that Jake was handsome, and he was considered the most popular male student back in college. She had accepted his feelings due to her preference for attractive men and his displays of affection toward her. Besides, they had been close friends since their childhood so it was natural that they would end up together. But now that they had ended their relationship, she saw him in a different light and realized that he could not compare to Joseph in terms of appearance or business skills.
“Mr. Jake, here’s a suggestion. Since you despise the poor and like to curry favor with the rich so much, I don’t think we can be friends,” Chloe said, sneering coldly. After that, she turned around and left, leaving Jake seething with rage.
Chloe did not go home. It was 5 o’clock in the evening after she replied to Emily’s message so she went to Emily’s workplace to find her. When Emily came out, she immediately asked upon spotting Chloe, “What happened? Why did it get so bad that you had to resign?”
When she read Chloe’s reply earlier, she was so shocked that she nearly requested her supervisor to be let off early.
Chloe let out a bitter smile and briefly told Emily the story. Upon learning the truth, Emily became extremely angry as she shouted indignantly, “How could your father do this to you?! How could he be so blind that he can’t even distinguish right from wrong?!” This text is © NôvelDrama/.Org.
Benjamin was so fixated on the project that he ignored the fact that his daughter almost got violated and compensated the jerk with her salary.
Emily just could not believe it. If she was not Chloe’s best friend, she might have thought that Chloe was adopted.
“I’m not going home anymore, and I don’t have to return to Artron either. It’s good that I can cut off all this unpleasantness from my life,” Chloe said in a light-hearted tone.
Emily could tell that Chloe was attempting to conceal her disappointment behind a calm facade.
“It’s okay, don’t go home then. Just move in with me,” Emily suggested.
“No need. I’ve already found a place to stay.”
“Huh? You’ve already found a new place?”
“No…” Chloe said, looking a bit shy for some unknown reason. “I married Jake’s uncle. It just so happens that he needed a marriage partner, and we got our marriage certificate done yesterday. He has a spare room in his house.”
Emily was stunned for several seconds and her eyes widened.
“Are you serious?!” she exclaimed, “You got married to him after knowing him for just a day?!
“Chloe, it’s fine if you like him, but shouldn’t we be a bit more cautious when it comes to marriage?”
It was clear from the nature of her questions that she was greatly taken aback.
“Well… I was a bit drunk at the time but I assure you that I thought about it thoroughly before agreeing to the marriage. Anyway, didn’t you tell me earlier that your company was hiring? Are there any suitable positions for me?” Chloe asked, switching the topic.
