When she left, Allison glanced at her new desk, let out a deep sigh, and sat down.

Verruckt, on the other hand, acted as though he hadn’t noticed her. His face remained blank as he continued working, which helped to relieve some of Allison’s tension.

Out of the corner of her eye, she looked over at Verruckt’s desk. On the shelf behind him, she spotted a safe — the same place where she had tricked Colton and Melany into believing the medicine was kept. But in fact, there were no drugs inside, only infrared lasers that would set off an alarm if anyone got too close.noveldrama

Her plan was to use that setup to make them trigger the alarm and draw the fire tomorrow.

As she was lost in thought, Verruckt’s phone suddenly rang. He barely glanced at the caller ID, but suddenly the mood in the room shifted to something far more dangerous. “Got it,” he said shortly, ending the call with just those two words.

Allison could sense the temperature dropping in the room, a chill creeping over her. Even without looking up, she could feel the weight of a piercing gaze nearby, as if a predator were stalking her. The pressure was nearly unbearable.

Verruckt’s low, drawling voice cut through the silence. “I’ll give you forty thousand dollars. Come with me tonight and play along.”

Allison looked up at him, surprised. “Forty thousand dollars? Where are we going?”

“The Immortality Group’s banquet,” Verruckt replied, crossing his legs with ease. “Are you in?”

“Yes.” Allison nodded eagerly, a wide grin on her face, acting like a poor woman who had never seen such money. “Forty thousand dollars! Of course, I’m in!”

Allison suspected the call from Immortality Pharmaceuticals was related to the earlier incident with the test subject. That meant it could be a golden opportunity for her.

“That’s unusual,” Verruckt remarked, tilting his head slightly. “You’re normally so cautious, yet you didn’t even ask if this is risky.”

Allison shrugged nonchalantly. “For forty thousand dollars, I’m not about to ask. Besides, with you around, I’m not worried.”

Verruckt chuckled, then pulled a bank card from his drawer. “Here’s twenty thousand dollars.” He tossed it onto her desk. “You can clock out now. Take this card and buy yourself something nice. I’ll pick you up at your place at 7 PM.” He gave her a quick once-over. “You know how to do your makeup, right?”
