Don’t say anything
Roman’s POV
I nodded at Nathan as he flung the car door open before getting in, and relaxing against the car seat.
Afterwards, I retrieved my iPad from my briefcase, and ran through my schedule for the day again even though I had been briefed on it by Nathan.
I sighed as various unbridled thoughts assailed my head.
What the hell had I done? Was I even in the right state of mind?
I had picked up a random stranger from the club, fucked her and as if that wasn’t enough, I had paid her to help me lie to my grandmother.
I scoffed inwardly, shaking my head at my absolute idiocy.
Well, it couldn’t be helped now. I just had to hope I hadn’t mistakenly taken a serial killer into my house to pose as my fiancée.
Almost immediately after the thoughts flew out of my mind, guilt enveloped me.
I thought back to Sofie.
The vulnerable Sofie who I met at the bar. She didn’t seem dangerous that night. If she was, she would have probably brutalized the pervert that was bugging her even before I got there, right?
Fuck. Whatever. The die was cast now and there was no going back.
I just had to hope nothing went wrong throughout the duration of our contract, and my Grandma never found out about my stupid arrangement.
At that moment, Nathan cleared his throat loudly which yanked me out of my reverie.
He glanced weirdly at me through the rearview as he coughed loudly again.
I frowned as I watched his antics.
He wanted to say something. He had wanted to talk right from when I introduced Sofie as my fiancée to him.
“Speak.” I said.
“About what, sir?” He asked, his gaze fixated on the road.
I huffed, “Don’t play dumb with me, Nathan. You know who I am, and you must know that I’m the last person you should try to act smart with, don’t you?”
Nathan cleared his throat, “I’m sorry, sir.”
“I will give you another chance to say what’s on your mind because you clearly have something to say.” I said, to which Nathan darted me a sheepish stare.
“Forgive me sir if I’m being rude but I don’t think your fiancée is suitable for you.”
My brows furrowed as I placed the iPad beside me feeling a bitter thickness block my throat, “What do you mean by that?” I managed to ask in a strict tone.
Fuck. I couldn’t let Nathan know about my plans because I knew he’d definitely tattle to Nana given how close he was to her.
Nana often invited him and his family for lunch at her place every weekend.
“I-I’m sorry, sir. Please forget I ever said anything like that, sir.” Nathan rambled out.
“Is it because she’s different from Lana and the others? Is it because she was not wearing an expensive luxury brand like them or do you just have a vain prejudice like this toward people?” I yelled, causing Nathan to wince.
“No, sir. I’m sorry, sir. I shouldn’t have said something like that.” He ducked his head apologetically.
“You are smarter than I thought. You caught on faster than I expected, good job.” I admitted trying to sound nonchalant but failing woefully.
There was still a slight tinge of dread to my voice.
I figured admitting to Nathan would be better than him finding out by himself and telling Nana.
At least, I could warn him against telling her.
“So you really hired her to play the role of your fiancée?” His eyes doubled comically which made me huff.
“I mean so I was right sir.” He said.
I shrugged, “Nana wants me to settle down, even though we both know how much I hate the idea of love and relationships.”
“Are you really going to marry her, sir?” Nathan curved a brow.
“Of course not. I just said I hate the idea of love and relationships, so why would I be willing to do something like that? I’m doing this to make Nana back off.” I explained, to which my assistant nodded.
“But won’t the chairwoman get angry when she finds out about this?” Nathan asked quietly.
I bunched my hands into fists beside me, “I will make sure she never finds out and that goes for you too. You will not discuss this with anyone because the moment you do and I find out, I will fire you.” I said icily.
Nathan made a gesture on his mouth.”My lips are zipped shut, sir. I won’t tell a soul about this. You can count on me, sir.”
“Good.” I muttered as the skyscraper building of the company came into view.
“But there’s something I want you to do for me. I should have done this before now. I want you to run a background check on Sofie. Find out about her family and friends, and the type of lifestyle she leads.” I instructed as I got down from the car.
Nathan nodded. “Yes, sir.”
“Make it as fast as possible.” I muttered.
Nathan nodded again before we climbed the flight of stairs that led into the lobby.
Some of the employees passing by stopped to curtsey before going their way.
As we entered the elevator, I said to Nathan, “Go to the best female clothing store in town, get some items for Sofie and also stop by the mall to grab some essentials for her.”
“Alright, sir.” He said as we trekked into my office.
He dropped my briefcase on a chair at the center of the room before he left.
I plopped onto the swivel chair with an exasperated groan.
So much had happened in the short span of a day.
So many tiring events.
I wondered what could have happened if I had never lied to Nana about having a fiancée.
If I had just gone home after listening to her nagging instead of making a detour to the bar.
It all probably happened for a reason. I concluded within myself.Exclusive © content by N(ô)ve/l/Drama.Org.
