Kris didn't even flinch as the cold metal of the handcuffs clicked around his wrists, despite the strain that was put on his shoulder joints by how violently the officer pulled his hands back.

A minute later, the other police officer emerged from the elevator walking towards them.

"Confirmed? Is he dead?" The officer holding on to Kris's arm asked.

The other officer shook his head. "No, but it's not really looking good for him." He indicated with his chin at Kris. "Wonder if his fists are made of steel because damn. The guy is barely breathing with his broken nose and his pulse is very weak."

"You think he will make it?"

The officer shrugged. "I'm not a doctor, but I've already called the paramedics. They're on their way to get him. In the meantime, you can send this one to the station and lock him up. I'll stay behind and take statements.

The officer holding on to Kris began pushing at him rather aggressively. Kris was aware of his legs moving, and being shoved into the back seat of the squad car, but he couldn't really see anything otherwise. He just felt numb.

At the police department, he was taken through the standard booking process; his belongings taken including his phone, his watch, and his wallet. And his fingerprints were taken. Kris did all those mechanically before he was thrown into a holding cell.

"Pray, Miller." The officer sneered, a sick sort of satisfaction on his face. "Pray that the guy you beat up miraculously survives so that murder doesn't become part of your charges. Otherwise you're going to spend a very long time in prison, son."

Minutes after Kris left, the living room was still thick with tension. Aunt Cynthia, Susan, and Tyler were still tearing into Karen.

Karen's body was hunched over her laps, trembling as she cried silently. Her face was streaked with tears, her hands balled into fists in her lap.

"I thought you were a decent

woman, Karen." Aunt Cynthia's voice rang out, sharp and furious. "I

thought you were better for Kris than Thalassa ever was. But now I see... I made a terrible mistake. Thalassa was a billion times better than you."

Karen flinched at every word, her sobs quieter but still wracking her body.

Tyler spat angrily, "I thought Thalassa was a slut. I thought she seduced Kris just to worm her way into this family. But you-" His words dripped with venom. "You're worse. You're a fucking whore. A damn tramp."

The insult hit Karen like a physical blow, making her shrink further into herself.

Susan was shaking with rage. She suddenly lunged at Karen, grabbing a fistful of her hair and yanking her head up. Look at us!" she shouted "Look at us while we talk to you How could you betray us like this? You brought your bastard child into this house and made us believe she was Kris's!"

She shook her head disdainfully. "I can't believe I ever thought of you as family."

Karen winced, her scalp burning from the grip on her hair as her tear-filled eyes met theirs. "I'm sorry, okay? Let go of me. You're hurting me."

Tyler sneered, his arms crossed as he glared at her. "Sorry? That doesn't mean shit. We don't tolerate traitors in this family." His voice dropped, colder now. "You need to be punished."

Susan let go of Karen's hair, stepping back, still seething. "But how? What do we do with her?"

Tyler's gaze darkened. "We should do to her what we did to Thalassa after she betrayed us. Let's kick her out. Both her and her bastard daughter. They don't belong here."

Aunt Cynthia Cynthia grew slightly quiet as she pondered over it. "I... I did love that little girl, though."

"It doesn't matter." Susan scoffed. "Tessa isn't Kris's daughter. She's not part of this family."

At that moment, Karen shot up to her feet, her voice trembling with defiance. "You can't kick me out! I'm
