Chapter 7 Breakfast talks
Luke was hurt by Mavis’s words, not because she yelled every single word at him but because everything she said was true. He hated and despised his father for not being “man enough” to be the breadwinner of the home. When he checked the documents, he remembered that the day his father claimed to have reached an agreement with Blaine over the sale of the house was just two days after he had fought with his father and called him a spineless fool.
Maybe Mavis was right – he thought. He probably doesn’t deserve anything good in life – not after the way he made his father hate himself, even more, every day. He felt a tear drop from his eyes before he walked out on all of them and even though he saw Darla asking him what was wrong as he approached his room, he couldn’t say anything. He was starting to have that feeling where it felt like a large lump was in his throat.
” Seriously Mavis, that was so unnecessary! Are you bringing this family together or are you pulling us apart? Instead of being so desperate about restoring glory to a building how about you worry about restoring the love that was once amongst us?!” Lisa confronted her before she also left to find Luke.
Mavis was beyond ashamed of herself for what she’d said to Luke. She didn’t mean to put it that way but her anger was getting the best of her. It was obvious that they were right. Blaine was the only solution now.
She got up and took one last look at the scenery on the Estate, the pool, the flowers, the lights, and little laughter that came from neighboring houses. She would miss it here but maybe it was just not meant to be.
” I should find those documents,” she said to herself as she left the balcony and went to her father’s office. She found the note he’d written about the Estate and was surprised when she saw that he actually said to sell the house only to Blaine.
How had she misread this? Luke was right all along. After spending some time looking through his things, she found a locket he used to wear around his neck back then. Inside it was a picture of their family when Lisa and Luke were inside her mother’s round, big belly. She was just eight years old and her bright green eyes revealed so much excitement for her siblings.
She used to think that nothing would separate them and her love for her mother was one of a kind. Her mother’s green eyes were filled with emotions in that picture, Mavis believed her mother was happy to be having kids again after several miscarriages.
And her father looked proud, a look he lost after her mother started cheating on him.
With a sigh, she closed the locket and wore it around her neck. Tomorrow she would talk to Luke and Lisa to patch things with them, then she would swallow her pride and call Blaine, she wouldn’t beg him though, she would only tell him that she intends to sell the house as he and her father agreed.
When he buys the house, they’ll go back to LA and she would never see this Estate… and Blaine again.
Mavis had just finished making breakfast with the help of Darla whose cooking skills were excellent and she had schemed a brilliant plan to ask her siblings’ forgiveness. It was a full breakfast and by far their favorite traditional British dish. First, there is the meat which is usually a combination of sausages and bacon. Then there are vegetables and legumes – baked beans and tomatoes, both cooked over high heat.
They loved it because the balance of sweetness and acidity in the tomatoes nicely balances out the fattiness on the other side of the plate. Lastly, there is a crispy piece of fried bread and two or three over-easy eggs to tie the whole meal together.
Mavis looked at the food on the dining table and shared a Conniving smile with her friends because she knew she would succeed.
” Is that what I think it is?” Luke said as he came down the stairs still in his pajamas.
” Full breakfast?!!” Lisa squealed and they both ran to their favorite seats and waited patiently like little adorable children for Mavis to sit down before they started eating.
Mavis watched them eat quietly and so did everyone else until they finished eating.
” Thanks, Mavis!” Luke said with a smile and was about to get up and leave when she called him back.
” Did…I do something wrong?” he asked innocently and it broke her heart to think that the first thought that came to his mind was to ask if he’s wronged her.
” No, you didn’t. I did,” Mavis said, tucking her hair and licking her lips as she stared at the food she barely touched due to nervousness.
” I am so sorry Luke for what I said yesterday. It was wrong of me to say something like that, I was just so upset yesterday.” Mavis finally admitted. Luke looked confused because, like his mother, Mavis wasn’t the type to apologize to him even when she was in the wrong. She would just bribe him with something the next day and that would be the end of it all.
So when he ate breakfast, he believed that was her way of apologizing, he didn’t really think that she would actually apologize with words.
” look at his face, so cute!” Darla said, giggling as she nudged Amy.
” I’m confused, you’re sorry?”
” Wow, it’s so obvious that you’ve never apologized to him with words.” Darla teased and Mavis covered her face in shame.
With the brightest smile anyone had ever seen on Luke since they came to London, Luke chuckled and said, ” it’s okay sis, Lisa already made me feel better anyway.”
” You little!”
” Mavis leave her alone,” Amy scolded while laughing hysterically at the face Mavis made while trying to bully Lisa for comforting Luke before her.Content © copyrighted by NôvelDrama.Org.
“What? She stole my moment!”
” No, I didn’t! Anyway, what are we going to do now about the real issues on ground?” Lisa asked, folding her hands and giving Mavis a very sassy look.
” Well…I did go through dad’s stuff last night and actually, it…says that we must only sell the house to Blaine – I know! I was wrong! Shower me with the ‘I told you so’, I won’t deny it,”
Luke went back to sit down and shared a knowing look with Lisa.
” We’re not going to say that because we’re more emotionally mature than you.” They both said in unison while Mavis glared at them before she scoffed and looked away.
” Whatever. How do we reach him now?”
” Good question!” Lisa exclaimed before she brought out a business card from the pockets in her pajamas and placed it on the table.
” Blaine’s business card?” Mavis asked, completely dazed by how her sister got it.
