The CEO's Empathy Pregnancy Pains

Chapter 248 Pretending to Care

With Isabella's blessing, Emily felt a warm rush of relief wash over her heart.

From now on, she wouldn't be fighting alone.

Sophia wouldn't have any more excuses to mock her.

Thinking about this, Emily felt a lump in her throat and leaned into Isabella's arms, crying.

The mother and daughter talked for hours, not stopping until dawn.

Because of this, Emily didn't hear her phone ringing in her bag until she was about to head out to buy food and saw over twenty missed calls.

Some were from Abigail, some from Michael, and the rest were work calls.

After a moment of thought, Emily decided to call Abigail first. She didn't plan to tell everyone the good news about Isabella waking up just yet, but as her best friend, Abigail should know first.noveldrama

"What did you say?" Abigail was at work when she heard the news that Isabella had woken up. She immediately jumped up from her office chair, startling everyone around her.

Realizing the situation, Abigail quickly smiled apologetically at everyone, said a few words of apology, and got up with her phone to leave the work area.

Abigail said excitedly, "Ms. Taylor woke up? Oh my God, I'll take leave right now to go see her!"

Emily replied, "No need, your work is more important. Actually, my mom woke up yesterday, but I was too excited and didn't have time to tell you... I'm sorry, Abigail, for making you worry all night."

Abigail said, "That's fine. I actually thought you might be at the hospital. I was working late last night and didn't know you hadn't come home. It was Michael who called me several times. He said he saw the house was dark and couldn't reach you, so he insisted I ask where you were."

Hearing this, Emily was momentarily speechless.

So it was Michael.

Abigail added, "By the way, Emily, remember to call Michael back. I couldn't stay up any longer in the middle of the night and didn't return his messages, but I think he might still be looking for you."

Emily replied, "Okay, I got it."

Just before hanging up, Emily suddenly thought of something and reminded Abigail again. "Oh, Abigail, don't tell anyone that my mom woke up."

Before Emily could explain further, Abigail immediately responded. "Don't worry, I understand. Ms. Taylor waking up coincides with your lawsuit with Mr. Brown. You have your plans; this is a business battle... I get it! But Emily, I must go see Ms. Taylor after work today. Ask her what she likes to eat, and I'll bring it over. See you after work!"

Before Emily could respond, Abigail had already hung up.

In an instant, Emily felt loved and cared for.

Suddenly, she thought of a question Michael often asked her: "Why are you always so good to Abigail? Sometimes even better than to your own husband."

Every time she heard this question, Emily felt Michael was being unreasonable.

Abigail was the best to her, so of course, she would be good to Abigail in return.

The relationship was mutual, and the president of Smith Corporation didn't even understand such a simple truth.

Emily sighed deeply.

Suddenly, she remembered that Abigail had just said it was Michael who first started worrying about her not coming home all night.

She decided to push those thoughts aside and dialed Michael's number.

To Emily's surprise, he picked up right after the first ring.

Was this guy secretly play

with his hone during work hours?

Then again, why would a president need to sneak around with his phone?

He was probably lounging on the couch, playing games because of his sudden injury.

As soon as Emily cautiously said hello, Michael's voice exploded on the other end. "Emily, do you have any sense of time? Look at the time now. When did I call you? Don't you know to call back immediately when you see a missed call? We haven't even divorced yet, and you're staying out all night... Is this the real reason you moved out?"

"I warn you, the Smith family is a prestigious family and can't tolerate any rumors, especially about you as my wife. So, please pay attention to your image before we divorce!"

What was meant to be concern somehow turned into harsh words from Michael in his anxiety.

To Emily, this was not concern at all; it was clearly sarcasm, both overt and covert. "Michael, what do you want?" The good mood that had arisen from Isabella and Abigail instantly vanished. "I didn't call to hear you criticize me."

Michael asked, "Then why did you call me?"

Emily retorted, "Are you crazy? Didn't you call me first?"

Michael said, "Yes, I called you first. Emily, I must have been out of my mind to call you!"

Emily was furious. "Good to know. Next time, don't contact me unless it's business- related, so you don't accuse me of tarnishing the Smith family's reputation. Right, Mr. Smith?"

Before Michael could retort, Emily had already hung up.

She knew that continuing to argue with someone as childish as Michael would lead to an endless fight.

She couldn't help but laugh at her baseless speculation that Michael cared about her. How could Michael truly care about her?

He only cared about himself and the Smith family. Marrying into their family meant only sacrificing for them, and nothing else could be asked for!

For the next few days, Emily went to the hospital to take care of Isabella.

She wanted to sleep in the hospital room to keep Isabella company and chat all night.

But a hospital room was uncomfortable to sleep in, so Isabella insisted that Emily go home to sleep.

Besides, Isabella's waking up was supposed to be a secret. If someone noticed that Emily was staying at the hospital all night, it would raise suspicion, and all their preparations would be in vain.

Thinking of this, Emily reluctantly agreed and went home.

Michael's leg hadn't fully healed, and he couldn't even remember when Emily stopped coming to Emerald Lake Manor to see him, not even to make him a simple bowl of oatmeal.

She had said that a bone injury required at least a hundred days of rest and that he should take good care of himself, but it hadn't even been fifty days yet.

She was all talk and no action, always finding ways to slack off!

She never told the truth, and her words were always so irritating... it was infuriating! Thinking of this, Michael frowned, got up, and hobbled out of Emerald Lake Manor.
