Chapter 247 Politely Declining Affection
Time flew by, and before we knew it, the morning was gone.
Emily was snuggled up in Isabella's arms for what felt like forever. If Isabella hadn't given her a nudge, she would've totally forgotten that Daniel was still hanging around outside the room.
He didn't have work this morning, so he didn't need to be anywhere.
Honestly, if Isabella hadn't woken up, he could've just stayed home and caught some extra sleep.
But no, it was because Emily's mom woke up that he jumped at the chance to come and keep an eye on things.
Isabella, being the sharp cookie she is, quickly picked up on the fact that Daniel had a thing for Emily.
She then thought about her rich son-in-law and casually asked Emily, "So, how are things going with you and Michael lately?"
Emily was caught off guard by the question and didn't know what to say.
If she said things weren't great with Michael, it wouldn't be a lie... As Michael's wife, she
had a say in Smith Corporation and was recognized by Mason.
But if she said things were good, it wouldn't be the whole truth either. Scarlett, her mother-in-law, was always stirring up trouble. In just a few months, they'd drafted four or five divorce agreements, and the asset division was almost done.
Thinking it over, Emily really didn't know how to respond.
Seeing this, Isabella got the hint.
She didn't push it and changed the topic. "Should we invite that doctor outside to come in and sit for a bit? I heard he's your senior and often checks on me. Otherwise, he wouldn't have been able to notify you right away when I woke up. We should thank him properly."
Isabella reminded Emily.
But Emily knew Daniel had feelings for her.
She only saw Daniel as a friend and didn't want to complicate things, so she said to Isabella, "Mom, I'll go thank Daniel. You should rest a bit more since you just woke up. Don't tire yourself out. I'll come back to keep you company and give you a massage."
Emily was indeed a very obedient and considerate daughter.
Isabella was very pleased and knew that with such a daughter, she would be willing to fight Hayden to the end.
"Alright, you go ahead. I've talked for quite a while and am feeling a bit tired." Seeing through everything, Isabella responded quickly. She leaned against the headboard and watched Emily walk out of the room.
Daniel was indeed very devoted.
Out of courtesy, he didn't follow Emily into the room but stayed to help keep an eye on things. After all, Isabella waking up was a big deal, and Daniel knew that Emily was too anxious to pay attention to him.noveldrama
Daniel said, "Emily, you don't need to apologize or explain anything. I actually understand. I'm very happy that your mom woke up, and even more so for you. You and your mom can finally reunite, and I'm genuinely happy for you!"
Daniel looked at Emily with deep affection.
His feelings were clear, and Emily, standing opposite him, couldn't completely ignore it.
Daniel's conditions were not inferior to Michael's. Moreover, he was considerate and understanding.
His previous confession had indeed moved Emily.
She knew she might never find someone as devoted as Daniel again. If she chose him, everything could change, and her future might look completely different.
But Emily just couldn't do it.
She couldn't put her finger on why.
It wasn't that she had a thing for pain or hated change, but if she had to explain it, she really didn't know why.
Even after thinking about it for a long time, she felt there was only one reason: Michael.
Emily said, "Daniel, thank you. My mom is getting better, but she's still a bit weak and not up for visitors. She said you could come over to our house sometime, and she'll cook for you to thank you properly. But, I hope you could help me to keep my mom's waking up a secret from others because, well..."
Daniel cut her off, "No need to explain, Emily. Don't worry, I won't say anything. You have your reasons, and you don't need to explain them to me. As long as your mom is healthy and you're happy, I don't mind keeping it a secret. I'd even be willing to stay silent for two days!"
With that, they both smiled, and the awkwardness melted away, making them feel at ease with each other.
Emily politely turned down Daniel's offer and thanked him as best as she could. Daniel didn't have much else to say.
He admired Emily and was completely devoted to her.
He didn't even see this as a rejection but as a new beginning for him and Emily.

With hope for the future, Daniel left the hospital.
As for what Emily would face next, he had no idea, and he later heard about it from Veda.
Emily stayed with Isabella, filling her in on everything that had happened recently until the early hours of the morning.
Isabella went from shock to acceptance, from disbelief to a bitter smile.
After hearing everything, she had only one thought: she felt sorry for Emily. "It's my fault. I didn't think things through. I spent most of my life with your father. I should have known what kind of person he is... He resents me because he could never surpass me. I earned more than him and had more resources."
"Maybe that's why he built up resentment towards me, and in the end, it all fell on you. It even led to you two going to court, which is really shameful."
Unconsciously, Isabella fell into deep self-blame.
But Emily always believed that if it weren't for Evelyn and Sophia causing trouble, she and her father wouldn't have reached this point. She said she was suing Brown Corporation, but it was just a front. Her real targets were Evelyn and Sophia.
Of course, Isabella wasn't someone to be easily intimidated.
She had been a career-driven woman for many years, much like Penelope.
She didn't care if Hayden remarried or who his new wife was, whether she was beautiful or had given the Brown family a son or daughter.
Isabella only cared about Emily.
If Emily wasn't happy, she blamed herself, but she would still hold the right people accountable. With a determined look in her eyes, she placed her hand on Emily's and said softly, "I'll go to court too. If the Brown family isn't afraid of making a scene, neither are we. I want to see what kind of woman dares to bully my daughter."
