Chapter 196 The Street Shrew
New sheriff. Belt tightening.
Thorne’s first meeting in his new position naturally had an air of authority.
The managers of each department sat nervously, not daring to take a breath. When Elijah was still in charge, they had respected him from the bottom of their hearts. But they didn’t know much about Thorne and felt a bit uneasy around him.
“Starting with the finance department, each of you will report on the performance and work direction of the past six months,” Thorne sat at the head, looking serious and aloof.
Just having taken office, he naturally felt confident. But too much confidence can lead to complacency. The finance department manager stood up, rambling on about the performance of the past six months, going into great detail. In short, there were no profits, only investments. “These are the expenditure lists.”
The finance department handed over the list of expenses. The more Thorne looked at it, the worse his expression became. Such a thick file, all records of expenses. The reason there were so many was that none of the expenses exceeded billions, as anything over a billion had to be approved by the board of directors. So, the board members were unaware of these bills. The wealth that Elijah had accumulated for the company over the years made them trust many of his decisions. Therefore, there hadn’t been much scrutiny of the company’s projects and expenses.
Thorne struggled to hold back his anger, refraining from losing his temper in public. The reports from the various departments that followed didn’t have any outstanding points. There were losses, project interruptions, and some that required further investment. In short, there wasn’t a single piece of good news.
The meeting ended earlier than expected, and Thorne dismissed everyone. Once everyone had left and the doors of the meeting room closed, he finally let his emotions show. “Elijah is just a jerk!”
Arwen sat in her chair, silent for a long time. She wasn’t expecting things to go so smoothly. This mess was something she hadn’t anticipated.
“Thorne, the board members don’t know about these things, and we can’t let them find out. Otherwise, they’ll say that all of this is our fault. We won’t even have a chance to defend ourselves. I’ve thought about it, and we must come up with two compelling projects in a short time to shut them up.”
Thorne understood this logic as well. The current situation was just wearing him out.
“There are so many projects in the company, there must be a few that are profitable,” Arwen encouraged her son. “You’re still young, and we have plenty of time. Don’t lose hope.”
Thorne didn’t want to admit that he was not as good as Elijah. So, he and Arwen dove headfirst into the mess of the company, trying to salvage and restore the former glory of Headence Group.
Because of work matters, even meals had to be put aside.
These past few days, Calista Winters had been feeling absent-minded. Thorne didn’t call her or make plans to meet, and when she tried to see him, he was always too busy. This surprised her, as Thorne had gained control of the Silverton family’s power and had abandoned her. She sat alone in the coffee shop, feeling melancholic.
Freya and Linda had gone to the supermarket and were thirsty when they returned. They coincidentally ran into Calista at the coffee shop. She looked downcast, worn out, and had even lost weight.
Freya pretended not to see her, hugging Kai and finding a quiet table by the window with Linda. But Calista, because she couldn’t embarrass Freya last time, ended up becoming the subject of ridicule in the office. Some colleagues even used this incident to mock her. Several times, she wanted to impulsively quit, but because Thorne didn’t see her and she had no one to rely on, she had to continue facing the mockery and keep working. Calista felt as if Freya was mocking her, even though she had nothing to do with it.
“Freya, don’t get too complacent. You may be lucky for a while, but you can’t be lucky forever,” Calista Winters said, appearing at her table out of nowhere. All text © NôvelD(r)a'ma.Org.
Freya was playing with her son and only looked up slowly when she heard the voice. Faced with Calista Winters’ anger, she remained calm. “I don’t know if I’ll be lucky in the future, but what I do know is that your days right now must be tough. If you were doing well, you wouldn’t have such an angry expression on your face.”
“You…” Calista was furious, her face turning red. “What makes you so arrogant? As far as I know, your man has been kicked out of Headence Group, and you’re no longer the Silverton family’s young lady…”
“My man may have been kicked out, but he hasn’t abandoned me. He still provides me with food and drink. I still have bodyguards, drivers, and servants whenever I go out. He may not be the CEO of Headence Group anymore, but he still has the means to ensure that I live a worry-free life, enjoying a life of luxury. On the other hand, Miss Winters, you seem to have lost quite a bit of weight recently. Is something not going well for you?”
Freya wasn’t being mean or boastful. She just wanted to provoke Calista Winters. Because from the conversation between Xander and Elijah, she knew that Thorne had been very busy lately, spending every day at the company. He had just taken office and needed to deliver results to make everyone submit to him. Combined with Calista’ sour expression, she guessed that there might be relationship problems between Calista and Thorne, which led her to say these things. However, these were indeed sensitive topics for Calista Winters. She was so angry that she couldn’t do anything to Freya.
“Don’t get too proud!” Calista growled and stormed off.
“Who does she think she is? So arrogant? She looks pretty, but her behavior is like that of a common shrew.” Linda sneered.
Freya said, with a teasing tone, “Her name is Calista Winters, Thorne Silverton’s girlfriend. Who knows, she might enter the Silverton family in the future and become my and Elijah’s cousin-in-law?”
She was joking, of course.
Because she knew that the people from the Silverton family would never be her and Elijah’s relatives, that was why she jokingly referred to her as “cousin-in-law.”
Linda understood. And she didn’t ask any further. She knew a lot of things, but she wouldn’t blurt them out or ask about them. Even if she knew, she wouldn’t tell anyone else. She knew her boundaries.
“Alright, we should head back now,” Freya stood up.
Linda followed, “Let me hold Kai for a while. You’ve been carrying him all this time, you must be tired.”
“No, thanks, Linda.” Freya smiled. She cherished the opportunity to hold her son for as long as possible.
Back at their residence, Linda and the driver carried the purchased items from the trunk of the car and brought them inside, while Linda took care of organizing everything. Freya was about to go to her room, still holding Kai, when she heard Elijah’s voice coming from the study. He sounded somewhat shocked.
“What did you say?!”
Xander lowered his head and said, “That woman is Elara Montague.”
