Chapter 158
How's the Baby?
Paul's voice was firm and uncompromising, lacking any room for discussion.
As he finished speaking, he coughed a few times, his agitation evident. Scott quickly offered him water, expressing concern. "Dad, take it easy. Since he's back, you can give him a piece of your mind."
Harper stood by the dining room entrance, stunned, her expression bewildered. Unsure whether to step forward or retreat, she remained rooted to the spot, her voice soft and hesitant as she greeted them. "Paul, Scott, Lily..."This belongs to NôvelDrama.Org.
Lily was the first to notice Harper's presence, her eyes widening briefly. Hurrying over, she took Harper's hand, saying, "Paul, it's Harper."
Then, she turned to Harper, her tone reassuring. "Harper, Paul mistook you for Benjamin. He wasn't referring to you. Don't take it to heart."
Harper nodded slightly, managing a faint smile. "Of course not."
Paul also seemed taken aback upon seeing Harper, but his expression softened immediately. He beckoned her over to sit beside him, whispering, "Good girl, you've been through a lot."
Harper shook her head gently. "Paul, please don't say that. That's not a big deal."
But the more Harper insisted, the more Paul's heart went out to her.
He said, "I'm well aware of all the despicable things he's done. Rest assured, I'll have a word with him. Tomorrow, I'll go to the Martin Group and set things straight."
"Paul, that's what I came back today to discuss with you. If Benjamin thinks I'm unsuitable for this project, I can step down. But it wouldn't be fair to Summit Realty. They shouldn't suffer because of me. If that happens, Summit Realty will struggle to survive in the industry."
Paul understood Harper's concern and nodded in agreement.
Then, he gave Scott a meaningful look. "Call him back. This matter needs to be resolved and explained!"
Harper bit her lip lightly before saying, "Paul, don't be mad. Maybe he's doing this for the good of the Martin Group's development. My company and I may not be big enough to partner with the Martin Group, but Summit Realty is different. It's an established enterprise. So, I want you guys to talk to him, letting him give Summit Realty a chance."
"So, you're advocating for Summit Realty. What about yourself?" Paul asked, sounding concerned.
Harper just smiled, "I'm still young. There's a whole lot of room for me to move up!"
Scott and Lily nodded in agreement, but Paul remained silent, deep in thought.
Harper didn't linger as it was getting late.
Paul insisted on accompanying her to the car. Walking alongside her, he spoke softly. "Harper, my dear. Sorry for putting you through this."
"Paul, please don't say that. I'm truly happy now."
With a nod, Paul changed the subject. "How have you been feeling lately? And how's the baby?"
"We're doing great. No need to worry," Harper reassured, placing her hand on her abdomen. Each day brought subtle changes, but she could still sense the profound bond between them. After a few more words of advice, Paul watched Harper drive off into the night.
As Harper left the Martin Manor, she passed Benjamin's car at a nearby intersection. Both had their windows down, catching a glimpse of each other, but neither stopped nor exchanged words. Little did Harper know, Benjamin would later show up at her doorstep, knocking insistently.
Harper had already fallen asleep and was roused by the knocking. Seeing him outside, she didn't invite him in, simply asking, "What's up at this hour?"
